(2) Read Lustig and Koester, Intercultural Competence: Interpersonal Communication Across Cultures Chapter 2 pp. 34-46 and Chapter 4 (all) & 5 (all)

(3) Read the Plato excerpts in Enduring Questions For An Intercultural World (and don’t panic)

(4) Write down one passage that you believe you understand, briefly summarizing your interpretation and also one passage that you do not comprehend.  A few sentences for each will suffice.  This exercise should be no more than one page, typed with your name affixed, due in class on August 23. This will serve as Prep Exercise #1 and will be graded Pass/Fail (see Syllabus).

Adv. Assignment:  Read and be prepared to discuss Chapters 1, 2, and 3 from the Boyd/Bee textbook.  To aid in your understanding of the content in each chapter, please complete the following exercises:

(1)   Interspersed throughout each chapter, you will find one “Research Report” box and one “The Real World” box.  Please respond to the pair of questions that appear in these two boxes for Chapters 1-3.  Your response to each pair of “Research Report” and “The Real World” questions should fill at least ½ page (typed, double-spaced) but should not exceed one full page per box.  Each response you write is worth 2 points (in other words, 4 points per box) and the grade will be based upon the quality (i.e., the degree to which your response completely and thoughtfully addresses the prompt) and clarity of your response. 

(2)   Please complete the “Test Yourself” quizzes that appear at the end of Chapters 1-3.  Print or type your answers to each question on the “Test Yourself” answer sheet that can be found under the “Assignments” tab of our Blackboard portal.  Each “Test Yourself” quiz is worth 2 points.

 

Please bring all parts of your Advance Assignment to our first class.  Total point value for the Advance Assignment is 30 points (10 points per chapter).
